About this drill bit index
A 3D printed drill bit index for the set you own. Choose metric or imperial sizes, the number of rows and whether they step up, a stand or a wall plate, and where the sizes are engraved. Every hole is sized to its bit, without learning CAD.
What people make with it
- Metric bench index with 1 to 10 mm bits in 0.5 mm steps on three stepped rows.
- Larger metric index for a 25-piece set, 1 to 13 mm in 0.5 mm steps.
- Imperial wall index with 1/16 to 1/2 in bits in 1/64 steps and a wall plate.
- Flat drawer tray with two flat rows and no back, to lie in a drawer.
Printed holes often come out slightly small. Print a short row first and adjust the hole clearance before printing a large set.
What you can change
- Bit set. Metric bits from 1 to 16 mm in 0.5 to 2 mm steps, or imperial bits from 1/32 to 3/4 in by 64ths, up to 64 bits.
- Rows. One to six rows, smallest bits at the front, either flat or stepped up toward the back by 4 to 30 mm.
- Back. Stand it on a bench, or add a 5 mm wall plate with two countersunk holes for 4 mm screws.
- Labels. Engrave each size beside its hole, each row’s range on its step, both or none, 3 to 8 mm tall.
Printing it
- It prints as it stands, base down, with no supports. The holes are cut straight down, and a wall plate stands upright at the back; its screw holes are small enough to bridge.
- Engraved labels read best with a 0.4 mm nozzle or finer and labels 3.5 mm tall or more.
- Choose your printer and the editor checks that the model fits its bed.
Common questions
How much hole clearance should I add?
Start with 0.4 mm. If bits are tight, raise it; if they lean or fall over, lower it. Printers differ most on small holes, so test the smallest bits first.
Which bits does it hold?
Round-shank twist bits, held by the shank. Hex-shank, reduced-shank and gauge-numbered bits are not covered yet.
How should I fix the wall plate?
Use two 4 mm screws with plugs suited to the wall. The plate is not load-rated; it is meant for a set of bits, not for tools hung from it.
Why does the size change when I change the bits?
Every hole and label needs room, so a longer set or larger labels need a wider or deeper index. Use Fit to my bits to set the smallest size that holds them.
Do I need an account?
No. You can generate and download without one. An account keeps saved configurations so you can return to them.
