About this model
Turning the knob on the lid swings a small linkage that slides two bars out past the lid's edge and into the box, locking it shut; turning it back draws them in. Nothing shows from the outside, so opening it becomes a small puzzle for whoever receives it.
This version has a festive patterned container and two knobs to choose from, a snowflake or a sprig of holly: print the one you like. The holly knob is split into separate bodies so it can be printed in more than one colour. The box holds a standard gift card and prints without supports.
What you need
From the creator’s instructionsIn this download
- Christmas container, lid and linkages STLs.
- Two knob STLs, snowflake and holly: print the one you want.
You also need
- A small amount of glue for the knob.
Before printing
- Print every piece in the orientation it comes in, with no supports.
- If the mid linkages break, print them in PETG.
Assembly
- Turn the lid upside down and place the inner linkage and both outer linkages. The outer linkages have one flat face and one slightly tapered face: the flat face goes against the lid.
- With the inner linkage horizontal and the outer linkages sticking out about 5 mm past the lid's edge, press the two mid linkages straight down onto them until they snap in. Pressing at an angle can snap them.
- Fit the knob onto the inner linkage on the top of the lid and check the mechanism moves smoothly, then fix it with a small amount of glue. Too much glue can lock the mechanism; drying the assembly upside down keeps glue from running.
How to use it
- Turn the knob to retract the locking bars, lift the lid, place the gift card inside, close the lid and turn the knob back to lock it.

- Changes
- The snowflake knob was separated, with its geometry unchanged, from the creator's file that holds it together with the Christmas container. That container is identical to the holly profile's container (23,490 triangles), which is the one included. Every other file is imported unchanged.
