Preview of Self-watering planter assembly

Rendered from the file you download.

About this model

Water sits in a 160 mm round reservoir below the soil. A wick threaded through the slotted basket under the tapered soil insert draws it up to the roots, a fill tube lets you top it up without disturbing the plant, and an overflow hole 38 mm up stops it being overfilled.

The download holds the reservoir and the insert as two bodies in their assembled position. Split them into separate objects in your slicer and print them apart.

Complete this project

From the creator’s instructions

This download is one part of a larger project. Here is what else it takes and how it goes together, as the creator describes it.

In this download

  • One STL containing the self-watering planter assembly.

You also need

  • An absorbent wick
  • Potting soil
  • A plant
  • Water

Before printing

  • Use millimetre units.
  • Plan removable supports beneath the soil floor and flange as described by the source.
  • Expect to check water tightness and capillary flow with a physical test before relying on the planter.

Assembly

  1. Print the reservoir and soil insert as separate physical pieces.
  2. Fit an absorbent wick through the wick basket.
  3. Place the soil insert into the reservoir and route the fill tube and overflow as shown by the source.

How to use it

  1. Fill the reservoir below the overflow level.
  2. Monitor the reservoir and plant until the wick and watering rate are understood.
  3. Check regularly for leaks, blockage and stagnant water.
